Afroprom, the first Nigerian prom concert is set to take place on the 14th of July, 2019 at the Eko Convention Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The concert is an opportunity for secondary school leavers to celebrate the successful completion of the first phase of their academic lives.

The big question is, “What are you wearing to Afroprom?”

Away from the actual topic, some celebrities, by this I mean Rema, Teni, Skiibii, Fireboy, Zlatan and Tunde Ednut have offered to pay 50% of the ticket price for all categories on Sunday, July 7. This means anyone that purchases tickets on Sunday will automatically get a discount.

Meanwhile, dressing up for this semi-formal occasion requires some help and creativity. While the boys may decide to wear a suit they have had for a while or buy a Tuxedo, the girls usually go a little bit further. Regardless, the first step to knowing what to wear is by setting a budget. While prom-shopping, a lot of people get caught up with the particularity that it is prom and end up buying expensive dresses and suits/Tuxedos forgetting that shoes, bags and other accessories will be bought too.

For the females, knowing your body type (shape and size) and what works for you, is also key in determining what to wear. Trim girls could settle for slender or straight dresses while plus-sized girls could wear long and less revealing dresses. This sometimes will also take some trial and error.

The males could decide whether to wear either suits or tuxedos as well as the colour. A colour that matches any colour that your date wears should be chosen. A boutonniere could also be placed on the left lapel of the jacket. However, the trousers should match the jacket. If you are wearing a Tuxedo, it should have a satin strip down each trouser leg. A plain white shirt should be worn and cuff styles should also be taken into consideration. Gold cuffs should be worn instead of silver ones and bow-ties instead of long ones.

For females, a piece of jewellery that complement their dresses should be worn. A handbag or clutch that complements the dress should also be used. Both males and females should wear colours that flatter their skin tone and comfortable shoes that work with their outfits. As a female, you may need to wear heels to raise your dress above the ground while the males could wear well-polished or mirror-faced shoes.

Different dresses and suits/Tuxedos should be tried on in order to narrow down your choice by making several shopping trips before you buy.

Do not choose accessories that compete with, rather than compliment your clothes, as this will make you severely under-dressed and uncomfortable.
