#UFC234: Israel Adesanya of Nigeria Beats Anderson Silva in Main Event
Undefeated Nigerian middleweight Israel Adesanya stepped into the main event spotlight and claimed the biggest scalp of his mixed martial arts career with a unanimous decision victory over Anderson Silva at UFC 234.
Adesanya was the heavy favourite against the 43-year-old Silva and in a thrilling fight between two brilliant, creative fighters, claimed the unanimous decision, 29-28, 30-27, 30-27.
Silva, 43, threw all of his old tricks at the 29-year-old phenom, but they all came up short.
The pair delivered a thrilling contest at the Rod Laver Arena as they showcased their spectacular martial arts striking techniques.
Adesanya, of Nigeria, refused to fall into Silva’s traps. He calmly touched him up with leg kicks and right hands, and avoided the big counter strike. According to UFC stats, Adesanya outlanded Silva in total strikes 65-34.
Adesanya remains unbeaten in his professional career, sitting 16-0.
“This is like, for a kid, if I played basketball against Michael Jordan. This is it for me,” Adesanya said.
“I do this s*** for real, and I do it against the best. Crazy week. I showed up to work, a lot of people didn’t. It’s out of their hands, you know, sometimes it’s not in their control.
“But, hey, Player 1 has the controller, so I showed up. Anderson, thank you. You’ve been doing this for a long time my friend, I appreciate you.”
After the fight, Silva was heard saying to Adesanya: “I pass the baton onto you.”
“I love my job. I know it’s tough. This game is tough,” Silva told the crowd after the bout. “This is my heart. This is my life. I continue to fight because this is my heart.”
