#PacquiaoThurman: Manny Pacquiao wins the WBA World Welterweight Title at 40 Years Old
Manny Pacquiao claimed the WBA ‘Super’ welterweight title after defeating previously-unbeaten Keith Thurman on a split decision at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
The Filipino was back to his best with speed and combinations enough to hand ‘One Time’ his first loss of his career.
Thurman – previously undefeated – had promised to send the 40-year-old Fillipino into retirement, but was knocked down in the first round before a thrilling fight went the distance.
“I knew it was too close,” said American Thurman. “He got the knockdown so he had momentum in round one. This was a beautiful night of boxing.”
Two judges scored the fight 115-112 in favour of the eight-division world champion from the Philippines, with the other finding in favour of American Thurman, 114-113.
The division is wide open now, with Pacquiao set to face the winner of Errol Spence Jr vs Shawn Porter.
“I’m just blessed tonight, he’s not an easy opponent. I think next year, I have to go back to the Philippines to work (as a senator),” Pacquiao says.
