Loftus: Chelsea Midfielder to Miss Europa League Final
Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek will miss the Europa League final with an ankle injury suffered in a charity friendly in the USA.
In front of the watching Roman Abramovich, Loftus-Cheek had to be helped from the field by Chelsea medical staff in the 68th minute after appearing to have his heel trodden on by a Revolution player, leaving him unable to put any weight on his left leg.
Reports has it that the England international will miss between five and nine months of action, meaning he will sit out this summer’s Nations League finals with the Three Lions and much of the first half of next season.
England manager Gareth Southgate confirmed on Thursday Loftus-Cheek would miss the game.
With only 13 days until Chelsea face Arsenal in the Europa League final, Loftus-Cheek’s injury means he will not participate and adds to the concerns of head coach Maurizio Sarri, who is already sweating on the fitness of N’Golo Kante (hamstring) ahead of the match.
Chelsea play Arsenal in the final in Baku on Wednesday, 29 May.
