ICYMI: Liverpool 2-2 Chelsea (aet, 5-4 on penalties) Watch All Goals
Liverpool won the Super Cup for the fourth time in their history by beating Chelsea 5-4 on penalties after a 2-2 draw in Istanbul.
Olivier Giroud gave Frank Lampard’s side a deserved first-half lead on Wednesday, but the introduction of Roberto Firmino as a half-time substitute changed the game for the Reds.
Liverpool got back on level terms just after the restart when Sadio Mane bundled home into an open net after Kepa Arrizabalaga had initially kept out his close-range strike from a set piece.
While the rest of normal time could not produce another goal, Liverpool went ahead five minutes into extra-time as a Mane rocket beat Kepa Arrizabalaga, but a soft penalty given when Adrian brushed Abraham inside the box allowed Jorginho to level from the spot (101).
But it was the European champions who triumphed in the shoot-out, Alisson’s deputy Adrian denying Abraham with his right leg to secure victory for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
The win comes just two months after Jurgen Klopp won his first trophy as Liverpool boss when he led the Reds to a 2-0 win over Tottenham in the Champions League final.
