Ecuador 1 Chile 2: United’s Sanchez Scores Again to Send Chile Into Quarter Finals (Watch All Goals)
Alexis Sanchez scored the winning goal to send Chile through to the Copa America quarter-finals with victory over Ecuador.
Chile took the lead in the eighth minute when Jose Fuenzalida volleyed into the net but Ecuador were awarded a penalty when goalkeeper Gabriel Arias clattered Jhegson Mendez, allowing Enner Valencia to level from the spot in the 26th.
But Sanchez’s goal put the two-time defending champions into the last eight with a game to spare in the group, with Gabriel Achilier seeing red late on for Ecuador.
Sanchez’s goal was his 43rd for his country but it came after he aggravated an ankle injury in the first half.
“I think I have a sprain, I hope it’s not too serious,” he said. “At half-time they strapped it up, I played on with a bit of pain.”
Chile coach Reinaldo Rueda praised Sanchez for playing on, adding that the ankle was not the same one he injured in May.
“He was evaluated by the doctors at halftime who said he could continue, although he put lots of ice on it at halftime. He made a huge effort in the second half,” he said.
“We’ll evaluate it again but we hope it isn’t serious.”
Chile can secure top spot in the group by avoiding defeat against Uruguay in a blockbuster clash in Rio de Janeiro on Monday, while Ecuador meet Japan.
