Black Woman Shot Dead by White Police Officer in Her Home
A black woman, Atatiana Koquice Jefferson has been shot dead in her own home by a white police officer responding to a call for a welfare check in the US state of Texas.
A police officer fired into a bedroom window while performing a welfare check at her residence, sparking outrage and calls for police accountability in a community whose trust in law enforcement has already been shaken by other police shootings and the death of Botham Jean in nearby Dallas, reports Vox.
In body cam footage released by the police, two responders can be seen using flashlights to search the home from outside before one is heard shouting through a window: “Put your hands up, show me your hands.”
A shot is then fired.
In a statement, Fort Worth Police Department said the officer fired the single shot after “perceiving a threat” inside the property.
