ATM Card Thief Arrested by Police
A young man, Obinna Okafor who specialises in dispossessing unsuspecting victims of their ATM cards under the guise of assisting them when they experience difficulty using the ATM machine has been arrested.
The suspect was found in possession of different fake ATM cards which he usually switches with those of his victims after he has memorised their pins.
Accordng to Punch, the suspect onceobinna notices a customer having difficulties with the ATM transaction, he would rush to the person’s assistance, and in the process, memorise the victim’s pin number, after which he will switch the ATM card with one of the fake cards he has in his possession.
The representative for the Enugu State Police Command, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, who confirmed the development, said Okafor was apprehended in the act on October 8, 2018, in New Haven area of Enugu.
Amaraizu disclosed that the attention of Police agents who were on duty at the first generation bank was drawn by a female victim, who raised alarm after Okafor had dispossessed her of her ATM card after first obtaining her pin number while pretending to help her.
“The woman was apparently having difficulties with her transaction before the suspect pretended to help her and in the process, smartly exchanged her ATM card with a fake one, after obtaining her pin number.
“The suspect was about to escape when the woman raised the alarm, which attracted the attention of the operatives on duty, who moved swiftly to arrest him,” Amaraizu said.
A total of 12 ATM cards belonging to various banks were recovered from Okafor after he was arrested.
Amaraizu noted that the suspect would be charged to court after investigations into his criminal activities have been carried out.
The Enugu State Police Command has advised members of the public to be security conscious, especially while making ATM withdrawals.
