Assets Declaration:: Court Turn Down Nigerian Govt’s Request For Ekweremadu’s Arrest
The Federal High Court in Abuja has rejected the request of the Federal Government to issue a warrant for the arrest of Ike Ekweremadu, the Deputy Senate President.
The charges were brought against Mr Ekweremadu over his alleged refusal to declare his assets to the Special Presidential Investigative Panel for the Recovery of Public Assets.
The Special Presidential Investigation Panel for the Recovery of Public Property had, on behalf of the Federal Government, urged the court to order the arrest of Ekweremadu following the absence of the senator, who, it claimed, was scheduled to be arraigned on Wednesday on charges of non-declaration of assets.
Adegboyega Awomolo, the defendant’s lawyer, objected to the request for the bench warrant, saying the presence of Ekweremadu in court was not necessary until the issue of jurisdiction and competency of the charge have been resolved.
The judge then adjourned the matter until February 26, 2019, to hear Mr Ekweremadu’s preliminary objections.
