AFCON 2019: Morocco 1-0 Namibia
A last-minute own goal handed Morocco a narrow 1-0 victory over Namibia at the Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday in an far-from-convincing start from one of the pretournament favourites.
Keimuine misjudged Ajax winger Hakim Ziyech’s free-kick as the 2017 quarter-finalists won in Cairo.
Morocco coach Herve Renard, who has won two Cup of Nations titles, had warned that the opening game for many of the tournament favourites may be difficult and his forecast proved true as Namibia goalkeeper Lloyd Kazapua produced several key stops.
Ziyech, expected to leave Ajax this summer, offered darting runs and trickery but Namibia remained well-organised before suffering a cruel blow as Keimuine’s error handed Morocco all three points.
Morocco will face Renard’s former team Ivory Coast on Friday (18:00 BST), while Namibia will take on South Africa later that day (21:00 BST).
