Jose Mourinho moved a step closer to a major trophy in his first season as Manchester United manager as goals from Juan Mata and Marouane Fellaini secured a first-leg victory over Hull City in the semi-final of the EFL Cup.
Mata gave Manchester United the lead 11 minutes into the second half, tapping in at the far post from Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s header across goal, though the Spaniard was in an offside position by inches.
Paul Pogba hit the post with 15 minutes remaining from a free-kick, before substitute Marouane Fellaini add a late second to put Manchester United in command heading into the second leg on 26 January.
Fellaini then dashed towards the dugout to embrace Mourinho, who can celebrate nine consecutive wins in all competitions.
United have won their last nine games in all competitions, their best run since an 11-game winning streak in February 2009.
